The local balneology center, which is the largest one on the Balkan Peninsula, offers different treatment procedures. The legacy of the region's colorful and complex history of ancient civilizations – from the mysterious Thracians and the Macedonians to the glorious Romans, Slavs, Byzantines and Turks – is abundantly evident in Plovdiv's grand Roman amphitheatre, the enthralling medieval monastery of Bachkovo, numerous Ottoman mosques and other sites attesting to a glorious past.
